Last week in my drama tutorial class, we acted out three one-act plays. Our tutor Miss Kasthoori assingned some of my classmates to act in the plays while some of us remained as audience. All of us had fun carrying out the activity. The plays that we acted out was The Ring Doesn't Fit by Tan Kee Aun , The Ring by Vincent Jeremiah Edwin and Selfish, Mr Pederson by Rheitta Desmond.
We were asked to read those plays a week earlier. When i read those plays, I didn't find all the plays interesting but The Ring caught my interest as it pictures a real teenager's life. The play was also funny. The Ring is a mixture of romance, supernatural, friendship, and parental love elements which shows the real life of some teenagers.
The play that I find as total absurd was The Ring Doesn't Fit. I couldn't find any moral values or dilemma in the play. When I read it, I felt that the author wrote the play for entertainment purposes rather than bringing out any lesson to the audience. It was a commercial play.
My opinion about those plays totally changed after we carried out the activity designed by out tutor. That was when I realised that a plays mood and tone can be manipulated when it is acted out.
At first, I thought Selfish, Mr Pederson was a play with serious tone but when my friends acted it out in a fun and humorous way, I realised that the play was actually humorous. It was manipulated with the voice and the way it was acted out.
I am looking forward to do more activities like this in my tutorial classes. These activities do change my perspective towards plays.
