After attending drama lectures and tutorials for nearly 7 weeks, I learnt on how to analyze a play in detail. Analyzing a play is not very easy as finding out the theme, setting and plot only. We have to know the background of the author and the century in when the play is written; these are important to get the deep meaning of the play and on why it is written.
I also learnt on how to teach a play. The activities that are carried out in tutorials are very much helpful for me to understand the play in detail so I believe that similar activities will help my students to understand plays in the future. The techniques and questions given also enhance our understanding and interest in studying plays.

experience writing a play
For all the reading of plays that i have done so far, i feel that it is nice and easy to read and analyse a play, but writing a play is the total opposite. Writing a play is tough and i realised it while writing our play. Maybe that is why my group members and i had a very hard time to write the first draft of the play.
We had to do almost four writings before we settle with the draft we came up with. This draft that we did still need editing and change. Doing all this editing and re-writing makes me realise how hard it is to come up with a script in a limited time period. No wonder not many people wants to become a playwright.
Selecting an issue to be used in the play itself was a tough work and then deciding a storyline to bring out the issue was the toughest part. We did survive with all that but was out of idea by the time we realised that our play does not fulfill the time requirement ( 15 minutes). We had to brainstorm again and add dialogues in certain scenes to make the play longer.
After all the writings we did to come up with the first complete draft, i feel satisfied with the story we came up with but i still think that we need to improve on our draft. Our play was interesting although not realistic. I think that the play will be something that teenagers will love to read as it has almost four main problems that are faced by young adults nowadays. It will be a good morale play.

reading oedipus rex
i never thought that reading a play will be very much interesting until the moment i started reading Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. lots of question aroused in me when i read the play but i still tried to get the meaning or message that the dramatist tried to bring out in this play.
Oedipus Rex is a story of a king who was born with a curse that he will marry his own mother and have kids with her. he was also destined to kill his father and claim his throne of Thebes and the queen. Oedipus, without his knowledge, fulfills the oracle.
while reading this play, i had a very hard time in understanding the dialogues as it was constructed and re-written to fit 425 BC. i had to read the whole play two times in order to get the main idea of the play and i guess i have to read it again and again in order to understand the whole idea of the play is being given by the dramatist.
the questions that i keep on asking myself after reading the play are ; why Jocasta did not tell the truth to Oedipus after she realised the truth? how come Oedipus did not realise the truth when Jocasta talks about the curse her first son bore? how did Sophocles get the idea to have such an issue in his play? how did Oedipus get the idea that Creon is the one who killed King Laios, while Teiresias almost openly blamed him for the murder.
i am hoping to get to class and discuss the play there. i will be very much interested to know more about the play.
