Taking the course Teaching the Language of Drama is very much useful to my area of study (TESL). Reading plays help me to understand the revolution of English language from the classic English where people use thee and thou as in Shakespearean works and modern English that we use in our daily life now. I could also identify the differences in English language used in different countries and ethnic groups. The African American uses different kind of slang and the Americans uses different slang just like the British who uses totally different slang. The varieties of English language that I learn will help me a lot when I step into the teaching world as students who watch movies or hear songs from different countries might adapt to the slang of their favourite artist and as a language teacher I must be able to recognize those slangs and teach students to use Queen’s English.
Literature trains me to not have a fixed perception about something as a character or story line might change anytime in a play. Fixed perception will make us miss the transformation of a character or story line and be totally lost at the end of the play. This value of not having a fixed perception on something is very important as I am going to become a teacher in the future. Teachers should not have fixed perception on students as it will restrict them to help in students’ development.
As I am minoring in English literature, this course helps me to develop my skills in paying more attention to details of a literary work rather than just reading it for fun. This course has been a great help for me to improve myself as a literature student and also to prepare myself as a teacher.
In my opinion, after 12 weeks of studying this course, I didn’t find any aspect of lectures or tutorials unrelated or useless to the area of my study. I totally gained a lot of new skills from this course which is very important for teachers.
Taking EDU3217 has been a great experience until now. The contents of the course are very much educational as I learnt lot of new ways to analyse a literary work. This newly developed skill in me make me very curious to know about some plays more so I often browse for study guides and analysis done by others to know more about the play. I believe I cannot interpret the plays much different from what I have learnt in this course. All my reading of study guides and analysis papers came to the same interpretation that I have learnt.
