For all the reading of plays that i have done so far, i feel that it is nice and easy to read and analyse a play, but writing a play is the total opposite. Writing a play is tough and i realised it while writing our play. Maybe that is why my group members and i had a very hard time to write the first draft of the play.
We had to do almost four writings before we settle with the draft we came up with. This draft that we did still need editing and change. Doing all this editing and re-writing makes me realise how hard it is to come up with a script in a limited time period. No wonder not many people wants to become a playwright.
Selecting an issue to be used in the play itself was a tough work and then deciding a storyline to bring out the issue was the toughest part. We did survive with all that but was out of idea by the time we realised that our play does not fulfill the time requirement ( 15 minutes). We had to brainstorm again and add dialogues in certain scenes to make the play longer.
After all the writings we did to come up with the first complete draft, i feel satisfied with the story we came up with but i still think that we need to improve on our draft. Our play was interesting although not realistic. I think that the play will be something that teenagers will love to read as it has almost four main problems that are faced by young adults nowadays. It will be a good morale play.

Hi Renuga,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that selecting an issue to be used in the play was a tough work. I also experienced the same thing. We usually enjoy reading plays but we never know how hard the playwrights struggle to get ideas for their plays.
Now I realize how hard to come out with an interesting play. The idea and the storyline need to be interesting so then it can amuse readers and attract their attentions. By writing a script for a short play, at least we learn how to write a script. It is nice, right?
Anyway, good luck my friend in your writing. Don't give up and all the best.
yes wani. at least we learnt on how to write a script for a play. and now i realise why Mr. Kee Thuan Chye is re-writing his play 'Swordfish then the Concubine' for so many times. i understand his feeling that he is not satisfied with the play he wrote.
ReplyDeleteI am of the same opinion with you that choosing an issue to be exploited in the play was a tough job. At first, I found it a little intricate to write a script seeing that it is my first experience to write a script. It is quite tricky especially in deciding the plot given that the play should be closely related to the Malaysian students’ life.
ReplyDeleteMy group members and I considered making our own play would be a simple task, similar to writing the exchange of dialogues between some characters. I was mistaken! Writing our own play is way harder than I thought it would be. My group members and I had been thinking of a plot, a theme, and an issue to write about ever since our lecturer gave out the course outline, and when we finally got together to start writing, it was really stressful. For me, it was really a mind challenging experience.
